Journey to Sense was created in May 2022 by Tatum Maya (Sweden) and Nandinne Kuntjoro (Indonesia). It began as a humble collaboration featuring Tatum’s paintings and Nandinne’s poems, which were to be displayed in a Mini Exhibition.
TATUM
MAYA
An expressionist artist living in Sweden, originally from Sumbawa Besar, Nusa Tenggara Barat Province in Indonesia. In 2010, she moved to Sweden, which then became her second home. Tatum grew up in a multicultural environment which gave her a wider perspective in art, and her work directly reflects this intercultural influence. She believes that culture plays an important role in life as the root of her identity.
Her arts can be experienced through the aforementioned geometric patterns (“Tenun ikat”), human figurative forms and religious symbols, which are intrinsic to existential reflection, and evocative of Western fine art.
She is mostly influenced by her own experience in the effort to express the meaning of her own personal emotions and deeply intrigued on how emotional effects can evoke moods or ideas. It also symbolizes the inner journey traversing the various realms of consciousness, from the material world to the divine.
“Sometimes people think art is always about beautiful things. What they don’t know is that the truth lies beneath each piece of artwork. The process of making art can be dark and lonely, often reflecting deep emotions and struggles. NANDINNE
KUNTJORO
As a creative writer and wellbeing facilitator, Nandinne’s journey of weaving words from a young age. She was born in Balikpapan, East Borneo, Indonesia, moved to Bandung in college, then moved to Jakarta, where she currently resides until present.
She would describe her journey in writing as an honest form of communication between her inner world responding to the world around her. Her expertise in the field of wellbeing facilitator contributes to a deeper sensitivity in the aspect of body, mind and emotional experiences.
As a woman living in a fast-paced world, she encounters situations in which women are often overwhelmed by the baggage they carry from the past; pressure, demand and expectation put on the present; and frequently anticipating for the future. But very few are familiar with the practice of embodiment (of their tension) and exposed with options on how to manage and release the excessive energy from the self.
Her writings portray layers of raw emotions and personal expression captured by her ‘senses, embodied by her ‘self’ and birthed as co-created arts with the artist.
"Through writing, I discover a world of wonders. In it lies insights and mysteries hidden behind people's stories, whispered through conversation, questioned and seldom answered. This fascinates me, as it births a new world of understanding and perceiving, that we share a timeless connection that cannot be explained, only felt. And so I write, to live, and to love." - Nandinne Kuntjoro
